This was our monthly read for #thephantombookclub.
It might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I wasn't particularly "thrilled" with this book. I love a thriller that shocks and makes my head spin with twists and red herrings, but this was a very straightforward thriller where the bad guy is revealed pretty much from the beginning.
Teddy Crutcher is the new "teacher of the year" at the prestigious Belmont Academy. He loves his job and his mission is to make his students strive to get better. Even students like Zach Ward, who is a straight-A student, but too arrogant for his own good. With students like him, Teddy has to apply some unethical methods to teach them a lesson, of course, it's all for their own good. But when one of the parents suddenly dies of poisoning during a school party, Teddy realises that Zach is the least of his problems...
I found it generally a slow story that failed to grip me. And by that I mean I could easily put It down during the day! We get multiple POVs in the same chapter, which was a bit confusing. It wasn't very clear where the story was going, which I normally enjoy, but here, it was puzzling. We follow one of the characters, get their POV and get involved in their personal life, and then that character is killed off and we move on to someone else. What was the point of all that information about them? I just felt that sometimes there was too much unnecessary information that distracted me from the main story.
But I agree that Teddy was an interesting character and I loved the way some chapters ended with a cliffhanger. Too bad the ending didn't come with a bang!
Always remember that this is my personal opinion that might completely differ from yours. You might find this one deliciously wicked and clever. Try it to find out!
3,5 stars from me!
