First of all, can we all just take a minute to appreciate this awesome cover? I mean, if that doesn't freak you out, I don't know what does.
Warning: This book is The Silence of the Lambs meets The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Terrifying and gritty with such a compelling writing style, it just grips you! Why this author isn't on the bestsellers list beats me!
The pace was fast and interesting and the character development was spot on. This is the first book in a series featuring Det. Tom Nolan but there are no cliffhangers so you can read it as a stand-alone.
The setting is near the Yorkshire Moores, which has got to be the ideal setting for any scary novel with a serial killer. In fact, while reading it I was reminded of the documentary The Yorkshire Ripper on Netflix!
While little girls keep vanishing without a trace Nolan is fixated with trying to find a lead. But soon the girls are not the detective’s only problem when a famous author, who is in town to write about the girls, vanishes from his rented home without leaving a trace. And then there’s the case of Gram Slade, a young man with intellectual disabilities who works at the local school and who everybody loves. Who is the ‘ghost’ lurking in the shadows of his room? And why does he keep finding bodies of dead pigs with biblical references tattooed on their skin? I’d like to warn the faint of heart that this has some gritty and gory scenes, which are now carved forever in the recesses of my mind. But it is not gratuitous and they are there for the plot.
That being said tread cautiously and if you do, you will be blown away by the twists and turns this novel delivers and by a MIND-BLOWING ending, I never saw coming!
This is an independent author so let’s support him. I'm ready for the second book in the series now!
5 stars!
